Financial protection products are essential for safeguarding an individual's financial well-being against unexpected life events such as illness, job loss, disability, or death. These products, such as life insurance, income protection, and critical illness cover, provide a financial safety net that helps maintain stability during difficult times.

Sometimes it takes a real-life story to hit home on why it’s important to consider protection products as part of your financial wellbeing. There are products to suit all circumstances and it’s well worth having a chat with your adviser to look at your situation and make sure you have something in place to protect you from financial hardship.

In July 2024, a member with British Friendly got in touch with them to claim on their Income Protection policy and Fracture Cover benefit. Working as a horse groomer, an unfortunate kick from a horse left them with a fractured tibia and unable to work.

The member was able to claim on their Income Protection policy and Fracture Cover benefit. Through their Fracture Cover benefit an initial £4,000 lump sum was received. Ten days later, after their deferred period had ended, British Friendly were able to pay their Income Protection claim of £2,608. A Total claim received of £6,608 - demonstrating the value of their Income Protection policy and Fracture Cover benefit.

Sadly, no physiotherapy was offered by their GP, despite being unable to work after the expected recovery period. However, through their third-party partner, British Friendly funded ten weekly sessions of private physiotherapy and the member was able to return to work in February 2025.

In the UK, 2024 saw a significant number of protection claims and payouts. Royal London paid out £751 million in claims across various protection products. LV= paid out almost £137 million in protection claims, supporting nearly 8,000 claimants and their families.
