GDA Money Explorers Part 2: Create a Simple Budget and Make Your Money Last Longer?
Helping Young Minds Learn Big Money Lessons.
Welcome back to Money Matters, a series that will help you become a financial superhero!
Have you ever spent all your pocket money on sweets, toys, or games and then wished you had some left later? Don't worry, it happens to everyone! The secret to making your money last longer is having a budget.
A budget is simply a plan for your money. Think of it as a map that helps you decide where your money will go before you spend it.
Meet the Financial Superheroes!
Financial superheroes don't have capes or superpowers. Their special skill is planning ahead and making smart choices with their money!
Instead of spending everything straight away, they ask themselves:
How much money do I have?
What do I want to save for?
How much can I spend now?
How can I make my money last?
That's what budgeting is all about.
Step 1: Count Your Money
First, work out how much money you have.
Imagine you receive:
£5 pocket money each week
£2 from helping around the house
You now have £7 altogether.
Your budget starts with knowing exactly how much money you have.
Step 2: Split Your Money into Pots
Many financial superheroes use three money pots:
Spend Pot
Money for treats and fun things now.
Save Pot
Money for something bigger later.
Share Pot
Money for helping others, charity, or buying a gi
Your money now has a purpose!
Step 3: Think Before You Spend
Before buying something, ask yourself:
Do I really want this?
Will I still like it next week?
Am I saving for something bigger?
Financial superheroes know that waiting can sometimes lead to bigger rewards.
For example:
Spend £3 on sweets today
Or save £3 for several weeks and buy a football, book, or game you've really wanted
Sometimes the best choice is not the quickest choice.
Step 4: Track Your Spending
Keep a simple record of where your money goes.
At the end of the week, you'll be able to see exactly how you've used your money.
You might even spot ways to save more next time!
Step 5: Have a Savings Goal
Saving is much easier when you know what you're saving for.
Maybe you want:
🎮 A new game
⚽ A football
📚 A favourite book
🧸 A special toy
Write down your goal and how much it costs.
Every pound you save is one step closer to getting it.
Superhero Budget Challenge!
This week, try creating your own budget.
Write down how much money you have.
Decide how much to spend.
Decide how much to save.
Keep track of everything you buy.
See how much money you have left at the end of the week.
You might be surprised how long your money can last when you have a plan!
Remember:
Financial superheroes don't spend every penny as soon as they get it. They plan ahead, save for important goals, and make smart choices with their money.
With a simple budget, you can become a financial superhero too!
GDA Money Explorers Tip
Give every pound a job before you spend it. When your money has a plan, it can help you reach your goals much faster!
